Land, biodiversity, life: Stories of Brazil’s nature defenders
Published: YesterdayAs Context’s climate and nature correspondent based in Brazil, much of my reporting is connected to the rights of people who live in Brazil’s biodiverse areas, such as Indigenous groups, Afro-descent peoples and riverside communities.
Their collective land rights are deeply linked to protecting vital ecosystems. When these rights are under threat, nature is also at risk. I report on the pressure communities and the Amazon face as invaders seek to burn and cut down the forest to claim the land as private farms and to expand the agricultural frontier.
In this collection of stories from my reporting deep in the Amazon and across Brazil, you’ll meet the people directly impacted and the challenges they face in protecting their lands, biodiversity and nature.
